The Stooges have lost their drummer.

Frontman Iggy Pop revealed in a Facebook post Sunday that his "dear friend Scott Asheton passed away" Saturday night.

Iggy praises Scott as "a great artist," saying he's "never heard anyone play the drums with more meaning" than Scott.  He also says Scott was like a brother to him, explaining the Ashetons "have always been and continue to be a second family" to him.  Pop adds that Scott's survivors include his sister, his wife, and his daughter, who was "the light of his life."  Iggy gives no details about the cause of death.  Asheton was 64.

Pop formed The Stooges with Scott and Scott's brother Ron Asheton along with their friend Dave Alexander back in 1967.  The pioneering punk rock group broke up in 1974.  Iggy reunited with the Asheton brothers in 2003, and brought bassist Mike Watt on board to round out the band's lineup.  Former Stooges guitarist James Williamson returned to the group in 2009, following the death of Ron Asheton.
